Northwest Coast
Artists’ Gathering
ANB Hall
Juneau, Alaska
May 31, 2006
Join us for a first-time ever Northwest
Coast Artists’ Gathering of contemporary and
traditional artists. The Gathering is an open invitation to
all artists, both Native and non-Native, working in the Northwest
Coast Native art traditions and forms. The Gathering will
bring together artists and scholars from visual, performing,
and written arts. Many of us have heard of or seen each others
work, but have yet to meet. A number of Northwest Coast artists
have expressed the need for a forum to bring artists together
to get to know one another, share ideas, acknowledge our teachers
and mentors, and to educate and inspire the future generations
of artists. This in turn will strengthen our art community
by creating a network and solidarity of artists professionally
and personally. We hope to attract both established and new
Northwest Coast artists interested in Native art, culture
and life-ways.
Since 1982, the Sealaska
Heritage Institute (SHI), based in Juneau,
Alaska, has sponsored the biennial Celebration.
In recent years, Celebration
has become increasingly focused on Native art and has greatly
expanded the audience for Northwest Coast Native Art. To
highlight the creativity of artists and to encourage greater
and more excellent productivity, invitational art
exhibits have been sponsored by SHI at the last two Celebrations.
Artstream Cultural Resources wishes to expand on the work
SHI is doing. Working in collaboration with the University
of Alaska's Museum of the North Fairbanks, the Juneau
City Museum and SHI, our first Northwest Coast
Artists' Gathering will be held at ANB
Hall in Juneau , Alaska on Wednesday,
May 31, 2006, the day before Celebration
begins.
